Hinako Shibuno

Hinako Shibuno AIG Women

Had never played in a major – or indeed any tournament outside her native Japan – before teeing it up in the 2019 AIG Women’s Open at Woburn. She had, though, just won her first two titles on her home circuit despite it being her rookie year and in a stunning performance she joined Hyo-joo Kim in winning on their major debut in the same decade.

A stroke behind Ashleigh Buhai after an opening 66, she was three adrift of the South African after two rounds, but then added scores of 67 and 68 to beat Lizette Salas by one with a closing birdie – her fifth in the final nine holes.

Nicknamed the “Smiling Cinderella”, Shibuno and Buhai rekindled their incredibly well-spirited rivalry in August at Muirifield, where after playing together in the final group Shibuno finished one behind the South African and just missed out on the play-off with Buhai and In Gee Chun.
