Melanie Green enjoyed a wonderful week at Portmarnock in June 2024 as she became the first American winner of The Women’s Amateur Championship since Kelli Kuehne in 1996.
The 24-year-old was four down after eight holes against Scotland’s Lorna McClymont and also found herself one down with three to play in a hugely dramatic final.
She then found crucial birdies at the 34th and 35th holes to secure the title in style.
“There is so much history to this Championship and it’s amazing to win it,” said Mel, who had previously been named the AAC Women’s Golf Player of the Year for 2024 following a superb season at the University of South Florida.
Having earned a spot in AIG Women’s Open at St Andrews in 2024, Mel didn’t actually play in the Championship so will now make her debut at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
Mel enjoyed a brilliant rookie year on the Epson Tour in 2025, winning the Island Resort Championship in June before claiming the Guardian Championship three months later.
Those exploits saw her named both that year’s Epson Tour Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
Having made her major debut at the 2024 Evian Championship, she has played a further three majors – all in 2026 – with her best finishes being T45 and T40 finishes at the Chevron Championship and US Women’s Open respectively.
