Celebrating the AIG Women's Open champion

Sophia Popov with the AIG Women

October 2nd marks the 28th birthday of the AIG Women’s Open champion, Sophia Popov.

To celebrate the occasion, we are looking back on her stunning win at Royal Troon, which saw the German claim her maiden main-tour victory after beginning the week as the world number 304.

You can watch highlights of her remarkable final round in the video player below, while our report on the dramatic conclusion to the championship is here.

We also produced a two-part summary of how Popov won the AIG Women’s Open. Click here to read about her performances in rounds one and two, and here for a rundown of her superb displays over the weekend.

Popov subsequently detailed how she came close to retiring from golf prior to her shock success. In addition, she gave a moving account of her battle with Lyme disease and explained why she chose golf over tennis at the age of 14.

Popov will defend her title at Carnoustie in 2021. Tickets for the AIG Women's Open are available here.
