Sustainability at the AIG Women's Open

The AIG Women’s Open is committed to playing our part in a more sustainable future.

With Greenlinks, The R&A’s programme for sustainable championships, The AIG Women’s Open is on a journey to embrace low carbon technology, innovate for a circular economy, champion social value and promote nature. Discover some of the highlights of Greenlinks at The AIG Women’s Open below.

The AIG Women’s Open Water Initiative

In partnership with Mastercard and the Priceless Planet Coalition the AIG Women’s Open Water Initiative provides free water refill stations on-site and supports the Priceless Planet Coalition’s reforestation work. Find out more here.

Renewable Electricity: The Championship is fully powered by renewable electricity through on-site solar panels, battery storage and sustainably sourced biofuel.

Sustainable Catering: Sustainably sourced, local catering is championed across the diverse range of street food traders on offer, with efforts to reduce packaging and food waste also in place

Low Carbon Transport: Electric cars form a key part of the courtesy car fleet, public travel is promoted (a GolfLink Train/Bus service will run between the local train station and the course), a free shuttle service from the local train station will be provided and free secure bicycle parking is also available.

Toward Circularly: Following the waste hierarchy to reduce and design for reuse. By working with contractors and local charities to reuse and recycle materials zero waste to landfill is once again being targeted.

Venue Management

A Sustainable Course: St Andrews Links practice sustainable management across their courses and clubhouse, with habitat protection, electric machinery and community all playing a key role. Find out more here.

Sustainable Agronomy: The R&A’s Sustainable Championship Agronomy Team work continually with all AIG Women’s Open venue courses to support best practice. Sustainable agronomy works with nature to create a bioclimate that sustains and enhances local plant and wildlife species.

Protecting Nature: Working with expert ecologists the site is mapped to protect sensitive habitats and measures put in place to reduce disruption to wildlife. During the Championship The RSPB will run daily Guided Nature Trails at the course to allow spectators to discover how golf and nature are thriving together at St Andrews Links.

Working in Partnership: Sustainability is a team effort, everyone plays a part. Working with patrons, official suppliers, contractors, venues, volunteers and community The AIG Women’s Open will continue to innovate and advance with more being done every year.

Celebrating the Green: The Ladies European Tour and LPGA Tour’s Celebrating the Green, Presented by Dow and delivered in close partnership with GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf celebrates sustainability activity happening on Tour whilst also inspiring and encouraging others to become involved.

We’re playing our part in a more sustainable future, you can play yours too. While your planning your visit and enjoying The AIG Women’s Open please:

• Travel by public transport or car share. Free bicycle parking is also available.

• Bring and refill your own reusable water bottle at the free water stations, or buy one on site.

• Use the recycling bins found across the course.

• Keep to official walkways and crossing points to protect sensitive habitats.

• Enjoy local, sustainably sourced, lower carbon food and drink.

• Join us on a Guided Nature Trail during the Championship.
